Financial Aid FAQ
Cost of Attendance
What does it cost to attend Princeton for a year?
The cost of attendance at Princeton includes tuition, room, board, books and personal expenses. Review the most current cost of attendance.Qualifying for Aid
How do you decide who gets financial aid?
Financial aid is awarded based on need only. We use the information you supply on your financial aid application to determine how much support we will provide. Information about how we determine financial need is available in the Undergraduate Financial Aid Information and Application Instructions. What does "need-blind" mean?
"Need-blind" means that Princeton accepts students regardless of their ability to pay the cost of attendance and meets their full demonstrated need with a "no loan" aid package. There is no disadvantage of any kind in the admission process for financial aid applicants.
Before I apply, can I get a sense of whether I might qualify for aid?
Yes. Just enter your financial information into the Princeton Financial Aid Estimator to get a quick idea of how much aid you may be qualified to receive. The Princeton Financial Aid Estimator is completely confidential and in no way affects your application for admission or financial aid.
Do you give scholarships for academic merit, special talents or athletic ability?
No. All financial aid awards are based solely on need. Learn more about how aid is assigned in the Undergraduate Financial Aid Information and Application Instructions.
Are international students eligible for financial aid?
Yes. Princeton is one of only six schools nationwide that doesn't limit the financial aid available to international students. Admission is offered to students regardless of their ability to pay, and the full need of every admitted international student is met just as it is for U.S. studentsApplying for Aid
How and when do I apply for financial aid?
You should apply for financial aid by February 1 of the year you plan to enter college. We encourage all students to use our easy online financial aid application. Learn more about applying for financial aid in the Undergraduate Financial Aid Information and Application Instructions.
Will applying for aid hurt my chance of being admitted to Princeton?
No. There is no disadvantage whatsoever in the admission process for financial aid applicants. Princeton has a need-blind admission policy, ensuring equality of opportunity for students who cannot afford the full cost of attendance. This policy covers all admission applicants, including international students. Learn more abouthow our aid program works.
My parents are separated or divorced. Do they both need to submit financial information for my aid application?
Yes. Princeton requires both parents to provide financial information in most cases. See the Undergraduate Financial Aid Information and Application Instructions for more information about exceptions.
Do I need to supply my parents’ financial information if I am a self-supporting student?
When awarding aid, we require parental financial information for all students, with very few exceptions.
If I do not apply for aid as a freshman and my family circumstances change later, can I request aid after my first year?
Yes. Students can apply for aid at any point during their time at Princeton. The Aid Award
When will I know if I will receive financial aid?
If you are admitted to Princeton and have applied for aid, you will receive a financial aid award along with your offer of admission.
What kinds of funds will be included in my aid award?
If you receive financial aid, your award will normally include a Princeton grant and a campus job, as well as any outside scholarships you earn. More information about these types of aid is available in the Undergraduate Financial Aid Information and Application Instructions.
Will I need to take out loans?
In 2001, Princeton eliminated student loans from financial aid awards, replacing them with grants. Since then, no Princeton student has been required to borrow as part of a basic aid package.
Does the "no loan" policy mean I would not be allowed to borrow if I wanted to take a student loan?
Loans are available, and some students request an optional education loan to replace a shortfall in the expected student earnings (term-time job or summer employment) or cover expenses not included in the standard student budget. Learn more aboutfinancing options.
If I qualify for aid, how much assistance will I receive?
At Princeton, we are committed to meeting 100 percent of the calculated need of each aid applicant based on an individual evaluation by a financial aid counselor. We make this determination using the information you provide on your financial aid application. Learn more about aid awards in the Undergraduate Financial Aid Information and Application Instructions. You can also use the Princeton Financial Aid Estimator to see how much aid might be offered based on your particular situation.
If my aid award includes a campus job, how many hours per week will I work?
We typically expect freshmen to work 7.5 hours per week, which allows them ample time for studies and extracurricular activities. Learn more about campus employment in the Undergraduate Financial Aid Information and Application Instructions.
What if I win an outside scholarship?
Outside scholarships from private sources are used to reduce the campus job and summer savings portions of the aid package. Once the earnings amounts are fully replaced, additional outside scholarship funds can be used toward the purchase of a personal computer. Princeton grant funds are reduced only after these other options have been exhausted. Learn more about how outside scholarships impact the financial aid award in the Undergraduate Financial Aid Information and Application Instructions.Aid for Study Abroad
Can I use financial aid to study abroad?
Students who receive financial aid continue to receive their funding for a term or year abroad on a University program.Aid for Eating Clubs
Is it true that eating clubs for juniors and seniors are too expensive for aid students to join?
The meal allowance included in the aid packages of juniors and seniors is based on the average cost of an eating club board plan. This policy provides access to a variety of dining options for all aid students, including the eating clubs.Renewing Financial Aid
Do I need to reapply for financial aid each year?
For each year of attendance at Princeton, students must submit a new financial aid application. The application is evaluated according to the same need-based guidelines that were in effect when the student was admitted.
Will I receive the same amount of financial aid every year?
It is our policy to meet students’ full demonstrated need each year. Award amounts may vary from year to year, based on changes in a family's financial circumstances and Princeton's cost of attendance.
Do I have to maintain a minimum GPA to remain eligible for financial aid?
There is no minimum GPA requirement to remain on financial aid, but students must continue to maintain satisfactory academic progress. -

Costs & Financial Aid
There is no question that a private college education is costly. But as costs rise, Princeton’s financial aid program has more than kept pace. In fact, our commitment to helping low and middle income students afford Princeton has never been stronger.
To support this effort, we have developed one of the strongest need-based financial aid programs in the country. Through this program, we actively encourage all qualified applicants to consider Princeton, regardless of whether they can afford the full cost of attending. If admitted, applicants can be confident that their financial need as determined by Princeton’s aid office will be met.
Financial Aid Without Loans
Princeton has a long history of making our educational opportunity available to all qualified students. For more than three decades, we've considered students for admission to Princeton without concern over their families' ability to pay — and offered aid to cover 100 percent of each admitted student’s need.
By the late 1990s it became clear that we needed to do more, and in 2001 the University implemented a variety of financial aid improvements to create the best possible need-based aid program. Central to this program is our groundbreaking "no loan" policy; Princeton was the first university to offer every aid recipient a financial aid package that replaces loans with grant aid (scholarships) that students do not pay back.
Since 2001, Princeton has been able to enroll growing numbers of students from low- and middle-income backgrounds with the grant aid they need to make our costs affordable. The change on campus becomes more noticeable each year as we welcome an increasingly diverse student body.Learn More About Financial Aid at Princeton
As you consider college options, start by learning more about the cost of attending Princeton and how our aid program works. You can even get an idea of how much aid you might receive by using the Princeton Financial Aid Estimator. For more detailed information, consult the Undergraduate Financial Aid Information and Application Instructions.Fees & Expenses(费用及开支)
The estimated cost of attendance for 2009-10 is $50,620 and includes:
Tuition: $35,340
Room charge: $6,340
Board rate: $5,340
Estimated miscellaneous expenses: $3,600
The room charge and board rate are standard for University dormitories and meal plans. Estimated miscellaneous expenses include the residential college fee, activities fees and class dues. These items, totaling $835 of the $3600 estimated books and personal expenses, are billed by the University along with tuition, room and board. Financial aid credits are deducted from the University bill of $47,855 for those who qualify, leaving the remainder due as a family payment on either a semester or monthly basis. This estimate does not include the cost of travel, which may range between $100 and $2,500. Students who are not covered by a family health insurance policy must purchase Student Health Plan coverage for $1,270. University charges are likely to increase modestly for 2010-11.
For more information on payment options, consult How to Pay for College.
How to Pay for College
Many families are understandably concerned about meeting educational costs, especially at private colleges like Princeton. Whether or not you intend to apply for financial aid, there are two key elements to consider in planning to pay for a Princeton education: estimating costs and looking at family resources.
As detailed in Fees & Expenses, the standard budget for 2009-10 (excluding the Student Health Plan and travel costs) is $50,620. Approximately $47,855 of this amount is billed by the University, while the difference of $2765 represents books & personal expenses that will occur over the course of the year. If you live a distance from Princeton, you should add anticipated travel costs to your budget. Additionally, if you intend to enroll in Princeton’s Student Health Plan, the $1270 fee will be included on the University bill.
With an estimate of college expenses in mind, the next step is to see how much your family can contribute. There are three primary sources to consider.
Once you have estimated the amount that is available from these sources and compared it to the estimated cost, you will have a good idea of whether you should apply for need-based aid. There is no automatic income cut-off for Princeton’s aid program, and each application is reviewed individually. Sixty percent of Princeton’s Class of 2013 is receiving financial aid and, if you feel your family might need assistance, you should not hesitate to apply.
Finally, refer to payment options to see how the University bill can be paid.
How Princeton's Aid Program Works(如何获得财政援助)
Our aid program is designed to encourage all qualified students — regardless of financial circumstances — to consider applying for admission to Princeton. There is no income cutoff on our aid application; any family who feels they may need help paying for a Princeton education is welcome to apply for aid.

Advanced Placement Credits
Are you taking advanced or college-level courses in high school? If so, you might be able to take advantage of Princeton’s advanced placement (AP) policy. Through this policy, you may receive recognition for your previous advanced or college-level work. The policy allows you to be placed in courses that match your level of preparation and, in some cases, may allow you to skip introductory courses and proceed to upper-division course work.
You can find detailed information about Princeton’s AP policy in our undergraduate course catalog, or review these frequently asked questions:What tests do I need to take to earn advanced placement?
How will my AP credits be applied to my work at Princeton?
When will I know how much AP credit I will receive?
Can I earn AP credit for courses taken at another college or university?
My school has a dual-enrollment program with a local college and I have completed college courses through that program. Can I earn credit for those courses?
What is advanced standing? What tests do I need to take to earn advanced placement?
When determining advanced placement, we typically use one or more of the following:
- AP tests
- International Baccalaureate (IB) higher level exams
- British A-Level exams
- SAT subject tests
- placement tests offered by some academic departments
For more information about required tests and minimum scores, consult the Reference Table for AP Credit.
How are AP credits applied at Princeton?
Students can use AP credits to enter upper-level courses or to fulfill the foreign language requirement. In a few cases, students who have earned a large number of AP credits use them to graduate early through advanced standing. AP credits may not be used to fulfill the writing requirement, reduce students’ course load in a given term or fulfill the distribution requirements. To see how your test scores may translate into advanced placement at Princeton, consult the Reference Table for AP Credit.
When will I know how much AP credit I will receive?
At the beginning of the fall term of their freshman year, students receive a report of all the AP units they have been granted. Later in the term, they receive a second report reflecting any scores that have since been received.
Can I earn credit for courses taken at another college or university?
Students are not eligible for credit for college courses taken before they enter Princeton. Many academic departments at Princeton offer advanced placement to students who have done well on an approved standardized exam (AP, IB, A-Level). Some departments may award advanced placement for a high score on departmental placement tests. Consult the Reference Table for AP Credit.
My school has a dual-enrollment program with a local college and I have completed college courses through that program. Can I earn credit for those courses?
Although students are not eligible for credit for college courses taken through a dual-enrollment program, students may earn advanced placement for high scores on departmental placement tests offered by some Princeton departments. Consult the Reference Table for AP Credit.
What is advanced standing?
Some entering students have earned enough advanced placement credit to accelerate their progress toward graduation from Princeton. Every incoming student enters as a freshman. In some cases students use their AP credit to take one term off during their sophomore year. Others have enough AP credit to advance to the junior class after their first year at Princeton. Eligible students are notified by their residential college dean during November of their freshman year.

Academic Preparation
During the admission process, our goal is to find students who will thrive in Princeton’s rigorous academic environment. With this in mind, we offer a suggested course of study to help students prepare for Princeton.
This is not a list of admission requirements. We understand that not all secondary schools offer the same academic opportunities, and we give full consideration to students who don’t have access to all of these courses.
If possible, we expect students will complete the following courses before beginning study at Princeton:- four years of English (including continued practice in writing)
- four years of mathematics (including calculus for students interested in engineering)
- four years of one foreign language
- at least two years of laboratory science (including physics and chemistry for students interested in engineering)
- at least two years of history
In addition, most candidates have had some study in the visual or performing arts.
Whenever you can, challenge yourself with the most rigorous courses possible, such as honors, Advanced Placement (AP) and dual-enrollment courses. We will evaluate the International Baccalaureate (IB), A-levels or another diploma in the context of the program’s curriculum.
Consult your school adviser or counselor to plan a program to help you succeed at whatever college or university you attend. -

Princeton’s admission process goes beyond simply looking for academically accomplished students. For each freshman class, we bring together a varied mix of high-achieving, intellectually gifted students from diverse backgrounds to create an exceptional learning community. We care about what students have accomplished in and out of the classroom. The process is highly selective. In recent years, we've offered admission to only about 10 percent of applicants.
As you prepare your application, help us to appreciate your talents, academic accomplishments and personal achievements. We'll ask for your transcript and recommendations, and we will want to know more than just the statistics in your file. Tell us your story. Show us what’s special about you. Tell us how you would seize the academic and non-academic opportunities at Princeton and contribute to the Princeton community. Above all, please write in a style that reflects your own voice. How to Apply

You may contact your college or guidance counselor for assistance in obtaining a fee waiver form from the College Board, NACAC, or ACT. If your counselor does not have access to these forms, he or she may write a letter on your behalf stating that he or she is familiar with your family’s financial circumstances and acknowledges this application fee would cause financial hardship for your family. I want to thank my partner in this journey, a man who campaigned from his heart, and spoke for the men and women he grew up with on the streets of Scranton and rode with on the train home to Delaware, the vice president-elect of the United States, Joe Biden.
And I would not be standing here tonight without the unyielding support of my best friend for the last 16 years the rock of our family, the love of my life, the nation's next first lady Michelle Obama.
Sasha and Malia I love you both more than you can imagine. And you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the new White House.
And while she's no longer with us, I know my grandmother's watching, along with the family that made me who I am. I miss them tonight. I know that my debt to them is beyond measure.
To my sister Maya, my sister Alma, all my other brothers and sisters, thank you so much for all the support that you've given me. I am grateful to them.
And to my campaign manager, David Plouffe, the unsung hero of this campaign, who built the best -- the best political campaign, I think, in the history of the United States of America.
To my chief strategist David Axelrod who's been a partner with me every step of the way.
To the best campaign team ever assembled in the history of politics you made this happen, and I am forever grateful for what you've sacrificed to get it done.
But above all, I will never forget who this victory truly belongs to. It belongs to you. It belongs to you.
I was never the likeliest candidate for this office. We didn't start with much money or many endorsements. Our campaign was not hatched in the halls of Washington. It began in the backyards of Des Moines and the living rooms of Concord and the front porches of Charleston. It was built by working men and women who dug into what little savings they had to give $5 and $10 and $20 to the cause.
It grew strength from the young people who rejected the myth of their generation's apathy who left their homes and their families for jobs that offered little pay and less sleep.
It drew strength from the not-so-young people who braved the bitter cold and scorching heat to knock on doors of perfect strangers, and from the millions of Americans who volunteered and organized and proved that more than two centuries later a government of the people, by the people, and for the people has not perished from the Earth.
This is your victory.
And I know you didn't do this just to win an election. And I know you didn't do it for me.
You did it because you understand the enormity of the task that lies ahead. For even as we celebrate tonight, we know the challenges that tomorrow will bring are the greatest of our lifetime -- two wars, a planet in peril, the worst financial crisis in a century.
Even as we stand here tonight, we know there are brave Americans waking up in the deserts of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan to risk their lives for us.
There are mothers and fathers who will lie awake after the children fall asleep and wonder how they'll make the mortgage or pay their doctors' bills or save enough for their child's college education.
There's new energy to harness, new jobs to be created, new schools to build, and threats to meet, alliances to repair.
The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even in one term. But, America, I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there.
I promise you, we as a people will get there.
There will be setbacks and false starts. There are many who won't agree with every decision or policy I make as president. And we know the government can't solve every problem.
But I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face. I will listen to you, especially when we disagree. And, above all, I will ask you to join in the work of remaking this nation, the only way it's been done in America for 221 years -- block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by calloused hand.
What began 21 months ago in the depths of winter cannot end on this autumn night.
This victory alone is not the change we seek. It is only the chance for us to make that change. And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things were.
It can't happen without you, without a new spirit of service, a new spirit of sacrifice.
So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, of responsibility, where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves but each other.
Let us remember that, if this financial crisis taught us anything, it's that we cannot have a thriving Wall Street while Main Street suffers.
In this country, we rise or fall as one nation, as one people. Let's resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long.
Let's remember that it was a man from this state who first carried the banner of the Republican Party to the White House, a party founded on the values of self-reliance and individual liberty and national unity.
Those are values that we all share. And while the Democratic Party has won a great victory tonight, we do so with a measure of humility and determination to heal the divides that have held back our progress.
As Lincoln said to a nation far more divided than ours, we are not enemies but friends. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection.
And to those Americans whose support I have yet to earn, I may not have won your vote tonight, but I hear your voices. I need your help. And I will be your president, too.
And to all those watching tonight from beyond our shores, from parliaments and palaces, to those who are huddled around radios in the forgotten corners of the world, our stories are singular, but our destiny is shared, and a new dawn of American leadership is at hand.
To those -- to those who would tear the world down: We will defeat you. To those who seek peace and security: We support you. And to all those who have wondered if America's beacon still burns as bright: Tonight we proved once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity and unyielding hope.
That's the true genius of America: that America can change. Our union can be perfected. What we've already achieved gives us hope for what we can and must achieve tomorrow.
This election had many firsts and many stories that will be told for generations. But one that's on my mind tonight's about a woman who cast her ballot in Atlanta. She's a lot like the millions of others who stood in line to make their voice heard in this election except for one thing: Ann Nixon Cooper is 106 years old.
She was born just a generation past slavery; a time when there were no cars on the road or planes in the sky; when someone like her couldn't vote for two reasons -- because she was a woman and because of the color of her skin.
And tonight, I think about all that she's seen throughout her century in America -- the heartache and the hope; the struggle and the progress; the times we were told that we can't, and the people who pressed on with that American creed: Yes we can.
At a time when women's voices were silenced and their hopes dismissed, she lived to see them stand up and speak out and reach for the ballot. Yes we can.
When there was despair in the dust bowl and depression across the land, she saw a nation conquer fear itself with a New Deal, new jobs, a new sense of common purpose. Yes we can.
When the bombs fell on our harbor and tyranny threatened the world, she was there to witness a generation rise to greatness and a democracy was saved. Yes we can.
She was there for the buses in Montgomery, the hoses in Birmingham, a bridge in Selma, and a preacher from Atlanta who told a people that "We Shall Overcome." Yes we can.
A man touched down on the moon, a wall came down in Berlin, a world was connected by our own science and imagination.
And this year, in this election, she touched her finger to a screen, and cast her vote, because after 106 years in America, through the best of times and the darkest of hours, she knows how America can change.
Yes we can.
America, we have come so far. We have seen so much. But there is so much more to do. So tonight, let us ask ourselves -- if our children should live to see the next century; if my daughters should be so lucky to live as long as Ann Nixon Cooper, what change will they see? What progress will we have made?
This is our chance to answer that call. This is our moment.
This is our time, to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth, that, out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope. And where we are met with cynicism and doubts and those who tell us that we can't, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people: Yes, we can.
Thank you. God bless you. And may God bless the United States of America.
